PICS BY MAIA ZADE

Irresponsibly wielding a camera since 2010.

If it can take a picture, I’ve probably used it.

I started experimenting with photography when I was 12 or so, stealing the family camera and snapping whatever I saw. Over the years, I’ve used a variety of devices to frame the world around me. While typically “documentary” in nature – acting as something of a journal of life events and adventures – I’ve worked harder to add some artistry to my shots.

NATURE

From wide-open landscapes, to wildlife, to the microcosm of plants, fungi, and insects, I love spending time out in nature and capturing what I see.

PEOPLE

I’ve always snapped pics of friends, family, and strangers – and while I’ve done a few event gigs here and there, I’m in it for the candid shots of people just doing their thing.

STREETSCAPES

The concrete jungle often calls to me and my lens. Which is to say I get extremely hyped about glass, doors, building fixtures, alleyways, vines growing on bricks, etc.

A PHOTO EVERY DAY?

From 2012 to 2018 (all of high school and part of college), I took at least one photo every single day, sharing them in weekly (or biweekly) blog posts. What started as a fun challenge to document a “boring” summer turned into six years of living by the lens and slowly improving through trial and error.

BLACK AND WHITE FEBRUARY

For most of the “Pic a Day” years, I adopted the (admittedly-strange) habit of taking all photos in black and white in the month of February, often changing my camera settings to make images monochrome rather than adding a filter at the end. (Kind of like shooting on black-and-white film before I actually got into film.)

I probably won’t have a newsletter, but… Stay tuned!

we’ll see…

    Chicago

Now that I’m living just a few hours from the third-largest metropolis in the U.S., I’ve had the chance to pay The Windy City a visit or two, or four – and surely I’ll go back if another favorite musician is playing a concert there (it’s been known to happen…

    Strike a pose!

Sometimes, pointing the camera towards a person is like an improv invitation. Should they accept the “yes” of the lens, I then accept the “and” of how they play along. Maybe I give them a suggestion or set them up, maybe I just see what they do. These are a…
